Doctor Who bosses are planning a live stage show of the cult TV programme.

The show, which will tour the country, will feature state-of-the-art light and sound effects along with 3-D footage of favourite characters including Daleks, Cybermen and Sontarans, The Sun reports.

A source revealed: “The BBC know they’ve got a massive hit show on their hands, so they want to take it to the next level.

“They want it to be a Doctor Who experience which will blast fans with amazing visuals and music.

“The emphasis will be on technology so it’s unlikely any of the show’s stars will be on stage.

“But they are expected to feature in video elements. That said, the idea of using real actors hasn’t been ruled out.”

BBC Worldwide are reportedly expected to officially announce the plans “within a month.”

The show is hoped to tour UK arenas in the summer holidays so children can attend.

Doctor Who has over 13 million fans in the UK and the DVDs and toys are best-sellers.

The BBC have already seen success with live versions of family favourites. The Strictly Come Dancing live tour is a huge hit, and Jeremy Clarkson Richard Hammond and James May recently hosted a Top Gear live show.
