A woman who sold potentially lethal toys and fake Doctor Who merchandise in Sutton has been sentenced to 300 hours of community service.
Kelly Magnus, 31, of Buckles Lane, South Ockendon, Essex, pleaded guilty to five consumer safety and four trading standards offences in relation to items she sold in the St Nicholas Centre in November 2007.
In early February Croydon Crown Court heard how Ms Magnus set up a short lease Christmas store in the Sutton shopping centre.
A test purchase by Sutton Trading Standards officers found one 16 inch toy doll with filling capable of suffocating a child and a pushchair which collapsed in testing.
A BBC Worldwide representative also confirmed that Dr Who toys on sale were counterfeit.
Trading Standards officers later returned to the store and seized £3,000 of stock.
Deputy Leader of Sutton Council Councillor Colin Hall said: “We urge customers to beware cheap goods, especially children’s toys, on sale in shops that set up for short periods of time and then move on.
“What looks like a bargain in the shop could have lethal consequences for a child.”
